We make new wood type, ornaments and custom designs for letterpress printers and enthusiasts. Our products are CNC machined from end grain beech, sanded to the precise type height and polished to a smooth finish. The default type height is 0.918” with a tolerance of 0.05mm along the end grain. Wood type can be customised to a different height or line size by starting a custom order.
Typefaces
The full founts below range from 60 letters in a 3A fount scheme to 105 letters in a 5A scheme. Current styles include serifs, sans-serifs and chromatic typefaces. Customers can also send us their typeface to be made into wood type! Check out previous custom wood type orders on Instagram.

Introducing WF Radium in collaboration with Oliver Weiss of Walden Font Co.
WF Radium is a German Jugendstil Art Nouveau font which Oliver revived from extinct originals created in 1905 by the Schelter & Giesecke foundry in Leipzig, Germany.
Samples of the original typeface can be found in the product photos. This variant is the negative, reversed-contrast-style revival of the original font. There is also a positive variant available now available in wood type!
This face is part of Walden Font Co.’s Art Nouveau Print Shop Vol.1, WF Radium was meticulously researched, redrawn, and expanded for modern use.

Samples of the original typeface were published in the 1874 masterpiece of chromatic type: Specimens of Chromatic Wood Type, which we used to carefully redraw the historic typeface.
Page Ornate is available as a Shadow set (60 blocks) or as a full Chromatic set (120 blocks: 60 shadow blocks and 60 fill colour blocks).

Introducing Caslon Rounded in collaboration with Commercial Type! This forgotten typeface found in the Specimen of Printing Types by Henry Caslon, 1842 was recently digitised by Commercial Type and is now available in wood type.
In Commercial Type’s own words -
”Rounding the terminals of letters has long fascinated designers—the first rounded typeface was cut by the Caslon & Catherwood foundry in 1836. The rounded terminals give it a warm and friendly appearance and, with a well considered lowercase, it is a design from the past remade for today. “Perhaps the strangest and ultimate example of experimentation in letterforms during the early nineteenth century was the Italian. Introduced by Caslon in 1821, it reverses the fat face’s stress—thins becomes thicks and thicks become thins—turning typographic norms on their heads. This new version extends the forms into new territory: a lowercase, an italic, and another one of the more unusual ideas of the time, the reverse italic or contra. Its limited success did not deter the typefounders from making another reverse stress form; the French Antique was less radical, but more commercially successful.”

Originally designed by Bob Newman in 1974, Penny Farthing has been expertly digitised by Mathieu Triay. The iconic face is now available for letterpress printers to create endless variations in their prints.
Never seen before in wood type, this release of Penny Farthing consists of 12 Line Regular, Condensed and Container blocks, alongside 6 line Small Cap blocks which lock into the containers to create movable glyphs.

Product Description
Designed by Donald Tarallo and made exclusively by Type High Design, FormPattern is is an easy to use set of shapes with endless possibilities. The blocks are cut with no side bearings so the shapes will touch and naturally flow into patterns.
Formpattern is ideal for large, flat-bed presses to create posters or large format prints. The blocks are 16line x 16line squares which are machined from type high, end-grain beech. The printing surface is sanded smooth and sealed with shellac so the ink wipes off cleanly.

Design

FormPattern began in sketches while observing geometric patterned mosaics in the cities of Bari and Palermo in the south of Italy. These mosaics were found in Catholic churches, yet their creation was informed by different cultures and spiritual traditions that had influence in Italy over the centuries. They represent not only the intended purposes of the Church, but also due to their connection to the art of Islam they symbolize the beautiful concept of harmony between god, humans, and the infinite expressed in geometry. These ideas are represented through continuous repetitive patterns made possible through underlying structural planning.

WF Radium is a German Jugendstil Art Nouveau font which Oliver revived from extinct originals created in 1905 by the Schelter & Giesecke foundry in Leipzig, Germany. This positive variant is a modern take on the original negative, reversed-contrast style.
Released in 2020 as part of Walden Font Co.’s Art Nouveau Print Shop Vol.1, WF Radium was meticulously researched, redrawn, and expanded for modern use.
